The Ty Nichols Heart of a Champion Memorial Blood Drive has been set for Tuesday, June 19th, at the First Baptist Church’s Family Life Center.

The blood drive is from 12:00 noon until 6:00 p.m. It is recommended to make an appointment in advance if you are on a time schedule. Appointments can be made by calling 1-800-RED CROSS, or 282-1194.

If anyone is unable to attend the blood drive in Guthrie, they can set an appointment on the 19th of June at any Red Cross blood donation center and inform them it is for the Ty Nichols Memorial Blood Drive.

“We would like to see if we can beat the record from last year and have over 100 blood donations in his name,” Tonya Nichols said. “You can also donate on that date at your local Red Cross and they can notify the Logan County Red Cross that a donation has been made in Tyler’s name.”

How important are blood drives? Just ask Brittany Torres.

“I just want to say that I think the blood drives are an awesome thing,” Torres said. “If the hospital didn’t have the blood that I needed, I would’ve died without ever getting to see my babies. So thank you for putting this together and thank you to everyone who donates! I never realized how important things like this were until I was the one needing blood.”We would like to see if we can beat the record from last year and have over 100 blood donations in his name. Nichols passed away unexpectedly on June 21st 2008 due to an enlarged heart. It was an unknown condition that doctors said he’d had since birth. He was 16 years old and is the son of Phil and Tonya Nichols.

Ty, who was a member of the 2007 state championship Guthrie football team, started six games his sophomore year, at defensive back, and played in all 14 games.
