It was Plan B, but members of the Guthrie Golf and Country Club did not mind a bit. As a matter of fact, neither did the participants in the College Wakeboard National Championships.
College male and female wakeboarders from around the nation met on the Country Club lake Friday morning for the first heats of the 2012 Wakeboard National Championship. The final runs will take place on Saturday.
The seventh annual championships was originally to take place in Oklahoma City on Oklahoma River, but was moved to Guthrie after the river tested for a high level of bacteria.
Officials at the Country Club were notified Thursday evening of the wanted move and were excited about the championships coming to their turf.
“The club should see a significant amount of revenue and exposure from this event,” Leslie Rhinehart said.
The event is being broadcasted by the CBS Sports Network and will premiere on Wednesday, July 11 at 8 p.m. as part of The Alt Games Presented by Jack in the Box on CBS Sports Network.
Collegiate teams consist of four men, two women, and one Wakeskate. The reigning national champions, The University of Tennessee Volunteers, will be defending their title against Arizona State University, Ball State University, California State University-Chico, Central Washington University, Florida Gulf Coast University, University of Florida, University of Louisiana-Monroe, University of Miami, University of Wisconsin, Virginia Tech University, Oklahoma State University and the University of Texas.
During a break in the action, one wakeboarder said he enjoyed the country club’s atmosphere more than the Oklahoma River.
“I like this venue compared to the one in Oklahoma City. Besides the rain, this has been a great site.
