Guthrie is now 2-1 in dual action and will participate in their first tournament of the year when they take on the Duncan Tournament on Friday and Saturday. The BlueJays are ranked fifth in tournament rankings.

In the Capitol Hill dual, the Jays worked quickly on their opponent with majority of the grapplers collecting a take down in the first 10 seconds of the match. Of Guthrie’s nine pins, six came in the first two minutes.

Collecting pins were Brian Herbst (:57), Alex Nelson (1:59), Austin O’Connor (1:48), Tyler Mahan (3:33), Bryan Dutton (:59), Andrew Toney (1:21), Jose Perez (2:47), Conner Howard (1:21) and Trevor Blassingame (:12).

Capitol Hill collected a pin in the final match on the evening. Prior to that, the Redskins could manage only one take down in the dual.

For Blassingame it was his first wrestling match in high school and took down his opponent in the first seven seconds before getting the pin five seconds later. A top junior defensive lineman in Class 5A football was recruited to the mat following the football season.

In the second dual, long-time Kingfisher head coach Ed Evey was limited after playing the Class 3A state championship football game over the weekend. The Jackets collected two wins on the mat and received two forfeits.

Timothy O’Connor went 2-0 on the night and 3-0 overall with a 7-0 decision at 132 pounds. O’Connor scored a take down in the first period and in the second period collected three back points at the horn. In the final two minutes, O’Connor used a reverse for the final scoring.

Tyler Mahan got his second pin for his second win of the year (2-1). With a 6-6 tie, Mahan got the pin 1:34 into the 145 pound match.

State champion Bryan Dutton, who pinned his Capitol Hill opponent in his first match of the year, had more of a difficult time in the night-cap. Despite controlling the entire 152 pound match, Dutton seemed slow down at times, but had two take downs in the opening period and another in the second. Dutton allowed all four of his opponent’s points by allowing him up twice after take downs, an escape and a release in the second period before playing defense in the final period.

Andrew Toney (182 pounds) improved to 2-1 with a 5-0 decision with a quick take down in the opening period and three more with back points in the second frame.

Conner Howard (220 pounds) perhaps has been the most impressive BlueJay so far on the young season with three wins on three pins. The junior collected four take downs before pinning his opponent just before the end of the first period.

Heavyweight Blake Finley was on the mat for the first time and with a 40 pound advantage made quick work on his counter part. The junior improved to 2-0 with a pin in 1:06.

  1. Dutton isn’t in mat shape yet apparently……better get that way before this weekend! But honestly, he’s always seemed more of a defensive wrestler. It gets the job done, but isn’t always as exciting.
