Five former Guthrie stand-out athletes and one team are set to join the Guthrie High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
The hall of fame class, includes Mallory Cowden Woods, Shane McKenzie, Parish Pierce, Brent Hodge, Ric Meshew and the 2002 state championship football team.
With the latest six inductions, the hall now belongs to 73 inductees.
The 2017 class will be inducted and honored during Homecoming festivities on Oct. 6.
Mallory Woods was a stand-out for the GHS track and cross country teams. She left GHS with titles in the 1600, 3200, 3200 relay titles in 2004. She helped lead the 2003 cross country team to a state title to go along with All-State finishes in 2001, 2002 and 2003.
McKenzie medaled all four years in the golf state tournaments, including the state championship his sophomore season in 1985. As a freshmen he captured third while finishing second in both his junior and senior seasons. McKenzie went on to enjoy a college golf career.
Pierce was a two-sport athlete in both football and wrestling. On the mat, Pierce finished as a three-time state placer with a third place finish his sophomore year, second place the following year and finished his senior season as an undefeated state champion in 1992. His senior dominance landed him All-American status.
Hodge was also a two-sport letterman and was able to accomplish a feat that many have not been able to do before … all-state in two sports. Hodge took over quarterback duties in 2003 and finished with over 1,600 yards passing. He may be best known for his 40 carries in a 16-13 win over a highly talented Douglass ball club.
In the spring, Hodge helped carry the Jays baseball team to the 2004 state tournament and will be well-remembered for his performance during the state tournament.
Meshew, who continues his coaching ways in Guthrie, has won seven state championships and is expected to contend for more in the coming years with the GHS golf teams. Meshew commanded the Jays golf state championships teams in 1992 and 1998 to go with three runner-ups. He was an assistant coach for the 1989 state championship baseball team and has been a part of all four GHS football titles.
The first ever football state championship team will be the first team inducted into the hall of fame. The 2002 team started the season 2-2 before winning eight straight games to finish a miracle run. Guthrie earned the title with a stout playoff run of wins over Ardmore, Tulsa East Central, Chickasha and Booker T. Washington.
The 2002 team put the program on the high school map and continues to be recognized as an elite program throughout the state.
The inductees will be recognized during the Homecoming Alumni banquet, homecoming parade, a hall of fame reception and during the Jays game with Northwest Classen.
The hall of fame was re-organized in 2016 after going dormant for several years.
