The Guthrie seventh grade football team could not overcome three turnovers and in the process dropped their first game of the season last Thursday to the hands of Chickasha. For the eighth grade team, they continue to remain unbeaten in their two-year junior high careers.

After a scoreless first quarter, the seventh grade Jays were the first to score inside Jelsma Stadium.
After Chichasha turned the ball over on downs, Guthrie’s Cale Cofffman dashed off for two 27-yard runs, including the game’s first score, on back-to-back runs to give the Jays an 6-0 lead. Coffman then ran in the two-point try to increase their lead 8-0.
However, it would be the last score for the Jays.
In the third quarter, Chickasha covered 52 yards on eight plays to tie the game up at 8-all. The Chicks took advantage of a 30-yard pass that was first tipped by a BlueJay defender and then fell into the arms of a Chickasha receiver all the way to the 3-yard line. Dayten Holman rushed for the score on the following play and Tristen Sandoval ran in the two-point try.
On the following BlueJay possession, Holman stepped in front of a pass for the Chick’s second interception of the night. Two plays later, Hampton was off to the races and scored on an 86-yard run to the north end zone. The two-point try was again ran in by Sandoval and the Chicks had a 16-8 lead.
Guthrie took over on their own 37-yard line with 4:25 to play in the game, but after five plays turned the ball over on downs following a Chickasha stop on a fourth down and one play.
The Jays fall to 3-1 overall on the season.
8th grade rolling up the wins
Eight minutes into the game and everyone inside Jelsma Stadium knew the eighth grade Jays were on their way to their fifth consecutive win in 2014 and their 13th overall victory in two years.

Guthrie took advantage with three scores in the first quarter en route to a 38-0 victory.
On Guthrie’s opening drive, quarterback Jackson Waddell hooked up with Marcellus Owens for a 21-yard pass connection to the Chick’s 19-yard line. On the next play, Waddell was gone for the 19-yard score and gave the Jays an early 6-0 lead.
Following another Chickasha three-and-out, CJ Ward returned the Chick punt 65 yards to the house to increase the Jays lead up to 12-0.
Again, the Guthrie defense held the Chicks to three offensive plays, and again the Jays struck quick for another first quarter score.
This time, Guthrie Jays needed two plays to score.
On the first play,Waddell scampered for a 39-yard run to setup Ward’s 4-yard touchdown pass off a screen play. Ward followed that up with the 2-point conversion to increase the score 20-0.
Blake Curtin added two more scores, including a 33-yard run to give the Jays a 26-0 halftime lead.
In the third, Curtin took off for a 44-yard run in the park.
Garrett Weldon rounded out the scoring with a 24-yard touchdown run.
