Guthrie’s 89er Day Celebration is underway and baseball takes center stage Thursday night with two baseball games and a free showing of the baseball classic “Field of Dreams.”
The Guthrie High School sophomore baseball team will square off against Midwest City High School’s sophomore team at 4 p.m. at Squires Field, located at 200 East Springer Avenue followed by the traditional Old Timers game at 6:30 p.m. with period uniforms and equipment.
Following the games, the film “Fields of Dreams” sponsored by the City of Guthrie will be shown at 7:30 p.m. at the Territorial Capital Sports Museum, located at 315 West Oklahoma Avenue.
Richard Hendricks, museum director, said the baseball games are designed to get young people involved with baseball.
“It is to commemorate America’s pastime and how it was played in the late 1880s in Guthrie,” Hendricks said.

Other 89er celebration events include on Friday the Guthrie Kiwanis’ Club hosting a “Big Wheel” race for kids ages 3-7 at 5 p.m.
At 6 p.m. over 200 classic cars and motorcycles will be parked on Oklahoma Avenue for the “Gasser, Geezers and Hogs” event sponsored by the Guthrie Rotary Club.
Following those “Wheel” events, the Guthrie Noon Lions Club is sponsoring two bands and an old fashioned street dance at Oklahoma and Second Street.
Friday and Saturday nights feature a rodeo at the fairgrounds starting at 7:30 p.m.
Gov. Mary Fallin is serving as parade marshal of this year’s 89er Celebration parade on Saturday at noon.
