The Guthrie eighth grade summer baseball team has been on a roll recently with tournament wins in Edmond and Guthrie, including a huge win to claim the Zorian Tournament.
First in the Edmond Santa Fe tournament, the Jays ran through three Class 6A schools to capture the title. In the first game they took down the tournament host team, 7-1, before piling it on for a 14-2 win over Edmond Memorial to put themselves in the finals.
In the finals, Guthrie proved to be dominant with a 9-1 decision over Putnam City Tournament.
The most recent tournament hosted a wood bat tournament over four days at Squires Field.
The Jays, who are coached by Seth Morgan, ran squeaky clean through the tournament. Well, sorta. On and off rains dampen play and left the field in wet conditions.
The highlight came in the championship game when the Jays were underdogs against a Deer Creek team, that entered the game at a remarkable 40-1. However, their second loss came to the hands of the Jays in a 12-10 battle.
To get to the title game, Guthrie took down the seventh grade Deer Creek team 10-3.
The BlueJays were not challenged in the first two games with a 13-2 decision over Santa Fe and a 14-4 win over Saint Mary’s.
The Oklahoma City Broncos, a home school team, gave Guthrie their tallest challenge in the final score with the Jays pulling out a 9-8 win.
