The ’89er Committee Meeting and The American Legion LeBron Post 58 have announced a need for community involvement in the planning of the ’89er Celebration, as well as a few tweaks to the event schedule in 2019.
Historically, Guthrie’s ’89er Celebration were exclusively planned and hosted by The American Legion in Guthrie (with assistance from the City of Guthrie) as a fundraiser for the Legion’s yearly expenses. As the number of Legionnaires has fallen in recent years, and public participation in the events continues to grow, the need for community volunteers has likewise
risen.
“The Legionnaires are wonderful people. I really enjoy volunteering with the ’89er Committee for the ’89er Celebration. These events bring so much joy and activity to the community; it would truly be a shame to see them stop,” Kailyn Swonger said.
Existing offices and subcommittees need extra hands, and several volunteer spots are currently open for the 2019 season.
Meetings are located at The American Legion, located at 123 N. 1st St., in Guthrie.
Starting October 1, meetings will be held the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. and generally last under two hours.
The next three meetings will be Wednesday, September 5 at 11:30 a.m., Monday, October 1 at 7 p.m. and Monday, November 5 at 7 p.m.
The 2019 ’89er Celebration will be held from Thursday, April 18 through Sunday, April 21. In addition, the carnival will be extended into Sunday this year.
The American Legion LeBron Post 58 invites anyone interested in volunteering for the annual ’89er Celebrations to attend the next meeting.
