During the May 18th VFW and Auxiliary District 9 meeting at the Guthrie Post 4578, Guthrie local Maegan Gray Bertwell, was presented with an honor shawl for her service and dedication to country and community as a Native American veteran. Meghan Norton, Senior Vice President of the Auxiliary and Osage Nation citizen made the presentation.
Bertwell, a citizen of the Muscogee Creek Nation, served in the US Army from 2001-2004 until she was injured during combat in Iraq.
The green honor shawl was custom embroidered with Bertwell’s branch, rank, and years of service and was trimmed with gold fringe to match the US Army emblem featured on the back.
Many Post and Auxiliary members in addition to friends and family secretly raised the funds to pay for the shawl and were in attendance. Her three children hid in the bathroom until the presentation to complete the surprise.
Bertwell gives back to the veterans of Logan County by serving as Senior Vice Commander of the VFW Post in Guthrie. The Veterans of Foreign Wars assists veterans (and the community at large), with guidance on negotiating the VA system, with financial support in times of crisis, and with providing a “safe” environment to have fellowship with other veterans among other things.
She encourages veterans who served in a foreign war to join their local Post and for family members of those who served to join the Auxiliary, which is the support organization for the VFW. New members and volunteers are always welcome. In addition, all veterans are welcome to visit the canteen for comradery with other veterans or if they are in need of information about their programs.
The Guthrie VFW Post 4578 is located at 5223 S. Division and can be reached at 405-282-2006.
