Guthrie’s Mason Barney is off to a great cross country season with two wins in three races, but many were waiting to see how the senior ran in a deep field with 6A and 5A runners. Turns out, he will be just fine.
Barney finished fourth overall in the Choctaw Jacket Run on Friday and was the only 5A runner to cross the finish in the top 10.
In the 5k race, Barney finished with a 16:54 time, which was 11 seconds behind the overall winner in Sapulpa’s Mason Quinton.
With an average mile run of 5:26, Barney finished ahead of runners from Owasso, Tulsa Union, Southmoore, Yukon, Moore and Carl Albert to name a few.
Earlier in the week, he was named as the Lions Club Student of the Month.
As a team, Guthrie finished seventh overall and first among 5A schools, including Carl Albert. Owasso took the team title with a tie breaker over Choctaw.
Freshmen Mason Mayer was the next Bluejay to cross the finish line in 28th place. Next was junior Jaxon Harden (37), sophomore Lance Sallee (46) and junior William Knell (53).
Guthrie is next scheduled to run in Tulsa on Thursday at Booker T. Washington.
