Day one of the Guthrie Baseball Regional was expected to be dominated by the favorites and it played out that way on a sun splashed Wednesday afternoon at Squires Field.
The favorites: Guthrie and Duncan.
The No. 1 seed Jays used a 12-run first inning to open the door to a 15-0 win in three innings over Tulsa Central, who was playing as the No. 4 seed. In the process, Guthrie snapped a four game winning losing streak.
In game two, the No. 2 seed Duncan had just as an easy time in their game with Classen SAS with a 19-0 win that also took only three innings.
The final game of the day saw yet another run rule game when Classen pick up a 12-2 win to eliminate Central from the regional.
Day one was expected to be a ho-hum day, but day two is expected to heat up and not just the Oklahoma weather.
Guthrie and Duncan are set for a 2:30 Thursday showdown with the winner in the driver’s seat to next weeks state tournament. The Demons are perhaps the hottest team in 5A by winning eight of their last 10 games.
One of those losses saw 6A’s top ranked Owasso Rams needing a squeeze play in the seventh to hold off Duncan. The Rams threw ace and nationally recognized Dylan Bundy, who’s fastball consistently is clocked in the 90’s.
Duncan is 24-10 and started the season by losing six of their first 10 games. It is expected that senior Tyler Gay to take the mound for Duncan who has had impressive outings including against Owasso and Carl Albert.
The Guthrie-Duncan loser must turn around and play Classen in an elimination game while the Guthrie-Duncan Thursday winner must be beaten twice on Friday.
