It has not quite set in for Beverly Sykes, but her counterparts at the Logan County Courthouse have noticed the void.
On Friday, May 31, Sykes said goodbye to her desk inside the district attorney’s office on the third floor of the courthouse and is now set to enjoy retirement after 40 years of work, including 25 at the courthouse, in the field of law.
Sykes joins her husband Earl Sykes in retirement, who retired from a long career in education.
Beverly Sykes first went to work in the court clerk’s office in 1973 where she went to work for Lois Webb until 1980. Prior to going to the courthouse, Sykes worked two years at the Guthrie Daily Leader.
In 1980, Sykes went to work for attorney Dale Dewart, and everyone else who went through Bruce Morgan’s office, before returning to the court clerk’s office 1986.
Rob Hudson was able to obtain Sykes services in 1986 and after Hudson took office as the district attorney in 1996, Sykes went along and worked in the DA’s office for the next 17 years.
Several of Sykes’ past and present co-workers, along with her family, gathered inside the courtroom to honor her with a reception.
Beverly and Earl have three children Amy, Jillian and Kyle along with two grandchildren.
Yay Beverly!! You’re too young looking to join us retirees. You still look the same as at GHS. You were always so sweet and friendly. I remember bringing legal documents from Merle Smith and his son, Merle Smith, Jr’s office, where I was his Legal Secretary (working with GHS 1971 Grad Judy Rhodes Foster) to the Court Clerk’s Office, enjoying the walk from the law office at Division/Oklahoma to the Courthouse, passing down the sidewalks of all the former Guthrie stores which didn’t survive WalMart coming to Guthrie. Miss those days. Happy Retirement, young lady.
