The Guthrie BlueJay baseball team will have their backs to the wall come Friday afternoon as their season comes down to needing two wins to advance to next’s week state tournament in Tulsa.
The BlueJays (25-11) dropped a 6-0 decision to Bishop McGuinness on day two of the Guthrie regional as the Irish are just one win away from advancing on.
The Jays, who are looking to get back to the state tournament for the first time since 2005, responded with a 13-2 six inning run-rule win in an elimination game against Skiatook. The Bulldogs end their season, at Squires Field, with an 11-20 season.
The Irish (20-16) struck for 3-runs in the first inning while adding a run in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth inning en route to the shut-out win. Guthrie managed six hits in the game while the Irish added eight.
It is just the second time this season that Guthrie has been held to zero runs when they fell to Deer Creek (8-0) back on April 18th.
McGuinness is now 2-0 this year against the Jays and are looking to get back to the state tournament for the first time since 2008 when they won the Class 4A state championship. They made three consecutive trips from 2002-2004 with the ’03 and ’04 season coming in 5A.
In the win over Skiatook, the Jays found the offense by scoring in each of the six innings they came to the plate with four in the first, two in the second, third, fourth and sixth and one in the fifth.
The BlueJays have won via the run-rule now 17 of their 25 wins, but the Jays will be just looking for wins on Friday to continue their season.
