The Guthrie boy’s tennis team recently held their Farmers and Merchants Boys Tennis Tournament at the Oklahoma City Tennis Center with Duncan taking the team title.
For the BlueJays, Dylan Walker took on No. 1 singles action for the first time this season and on top of that saw good competition in dropping his matches. In the first match he played Nic Zinn from Duncan and got beat 6-0, 6-1, in his second round he played
Deer Creek and lost 6-0, 6-1. In his final round he lost to Luke Andrew from Perry and lost 6-3, 6-3.
Dalton Jones, who also was playing singles for the first time this year at No. 2 singles, lost to Duncan 6-2, 6-0, in the second round he lost to Deer Creek 6-1, 7-5, and in his last round he lost to another Duncan team 6-1, 6-4.
In doubles action, Andy Hartley and Josh Wehrenberg took fourth overall in the No. 1 doubles bracket. In the first round they defeated Altus 6-2, 6-0. In the second round they lost to Ada 6-1, 6-2 and in the final round for third they lost to Duncan in three sets.
“We won the first set 6-2, lost the second set 2-6 and lost the last set 1-6. They had beaten this team earlier in the year and this was a disappointing loss,” head coach Mary Hudson said.
Barrett Porter and Seth Vicchio played in No. 2 doubles action and in the first round they lost to Ada 6-4, 6-2. In the second round they defeated Stillwater 6-3, 6-4 and in the last round for consolation they beat Perry 6-1, 6-2.
Hudson was very complimentary of the tournament sponsor, “Big thanks to Farmers and Merchants Bank for helping sponsor this tournament.”
