Bluejays dominate El Reno with 42-0 shutout win

The Guthrie Bluejays earned their fifth straight victory Friday night with their first shutout of the season, defeating El Reno 42-0 inside Jelsma Stadium.

With the win, Guthrie improves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in district play, while El Reno falls to 1-5 and 0-3. The Indians will look to rebound with a favorable schedule to close out the season.

The Bluejays wasted no time getting on the board, scoring on their opening drive in just two plays with a 39-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Daelon Rice to senior wide receiver Jace Rainwater.

Guthrie added another score on their next possession with a three-yard touchdown catch by senior Maddux Vaughan to cap a 10-play, 67-yard drive.

In the third quarter, Guthrie broke the game open with three touchdowns — a 52-yard run by senior Zane Thomas, a 39-yard touchdown run by Whitehorn, and a 15-yard touchdown reception by Rainwater. Senior running back Elijah Smith added the final score with a one-yard run.

Guthrie’s defense was dominant, holding El Reno to just 35 rushing yards and 50 total yards.

The Bluejays stayed balanced offensively with 177 rushing yards and 190 passing yards, despite being penalized 12 times for 135 yards.

Next up, the Jays hit the road to face Western Heights on Thursday for the annual Fall Break game.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
