Cross country runners always want their last race of the season happen in the state meet and that is exactly what happen for 9 Guthrie High School runners. The day was capped off with the BlueJay team holding the Class 5A Academic State Championship.
The Lady Jays were paced by Lexi Hastings and Lauren Toney and seven members of the boys team.
Hastings, a sophomore, running in her second state meet finished 22nd overall with a time of 13:15. Her teammate, Toney, followed in 35 seconds later to finish in 50th place.
The BlueJays finished 12th overall with 279 team points as the Deer Creek Antlers secured their third straight Class 5A title on the course at Edmond Santa Fe with 36 points.
Leading the way all season long was Brandon Greenlee as he did on Saturday.
Greenlee finished 31st overall with a time of 17:40. Deer Creek’s Bryce Balenseifen captured his second straight title in a time of 15:47.
A trio of BlueJays came across the line in a span of 22 seconds led by Hunter Stephens (18:27), Ryan McIntire (18:39) and Conner Self (18:49).
Sean Harvey was the fifth BlueJay to cross at 19:06 and was followed up with Dakota Pruitt (19:42) and Tommy Beauchamp (19:50).
