The Oklahoma Turnpike Authority board approved two agenda items at its Friday, Sept. 30, meeting aimed at aiding in the conversion to PlatePay (cashless tolling). The routine votes help establish the PlatePay toll rates for drivers along the Creek Turnpike and aid in preliminary design work for the conversion to PlatePay on the Turner and Will Rogers turnpikes.
“PlatePay is what increases the safety of the those that use the turnpike network.” Secretary of Transportation and OTA Executive Director Tim Gatz said. “PlatePay is a significant project for us that’s not easy to do, but going cashless is long overdue in Oklahoma.”
The Creek Turnpike, connecting I-44 to US-412 in Tulsa, is set to be fully converted to PlatePay by the end of 2022.
Board members also approved a more than $200,000 contract modification for preliminary design work related to the PlatePay conversion along the Turner and Will Rogers turnpikes. The Authority plans to have all turnpikes in the state converted to PlatePay by the end of 2024.
PlatePay helps create a free-flow of traffic by using cameras to take a photo of a vehicle’s license plate and enabling the OTA to send the registered owner an invoice. Drivers without PIKEPASS will receive a bill in the mail. PIKEPASS customers will not see any changes.
The board, a six-member panel appointed by the governor to an eight-year term to oversee turnpike development, awards project contracts for road and bridge construction on a monthly basis. The next Oklahoma Turnpike Authority board meeting is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Oklahoma Department of Transportation Commission Room, 200 N.E. 21st St., Oklahoma City. The meeting also will be available to view live online.
