Shelby County Sheriff’s Department (SCSO), in Memphis, confirmed a 22-year-old woman’s body found on top of a barge in the Mississippi was from Oklahoma. Her social media says she lived in Guthrie.
The body of Hailey Silas was found by a barge crew on Saturday morning, a few hours after the barge had left Memphis.
Chief Deputy Anthony Buckner with SCSO told the media on Saturday that no foul play was suspected in the woman’s death, though she did have injuries when her body was found.
Authorities said the family had been notified early Tuesday morning.
It’s unknown what brought Silas to the border between Arkansas and Tennessee.
WREG News 3 reports that Silas was taken into custody by police on Oct. 15. A police report says she repeatedly called 911 from a gas station asking police to give her a ride out of the city because she was scared of something.
When police arrived, she told them she was having a “panic attack.” She asked to talk to her mom and dad, said she was scared and confused, and asked to be taken to a “psych ward,” according to the WREG, a CBS news affiliate.
The television station says Silas pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of communicating a false alarm, was given a suspended sentence of time served, and was also given a psychiatric evaluation.
Silas was found dead three days later.
Silas’ Facebook page posted that she went to Wellston High School, was from Luther, and lived in Guthrie.
The investigation is ongoing.
