Boys track claims regional title; set to defend

 

The bulls eye target has been on the Guthrie boys track all season long and opponents will have one more opportunity to try to take them down as state champions.

The BlueJays, who have won the last two 5A state track meets, needed almost every single point they earned at the Mustang High School track to claim the regional championship. The Jays edged Deer Creek by four points 178-174 as Shawnee was a distance third with 85 points.

Emmanuel Robinson was up to his usual self by winning the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.71 to edge out his Deer Creek opponent by .10 of a second. Robinson turned around and won the 200 meter dash with a little bit more room when he ran a 22.22 and was .25 quicker then his Deer Creek runner.

Robinson continued his winning ways in the 100 meter hurdles as he blew by his opponents with a 14.25 finals times. The next runner came across at the 15.40 mark.

In the 400 meter run, sophomore Kyle Owens finished fourth as his teammate, Evan Watts, finished behind him.

In the 800 meter run it was Zac Cates and Alex Dorio advancing to state as they finished third and fourth. Cates finished with a time of 2:04.56 while Dorio came in at 2:05.39.

Cates and Walker Crosss finished second and third behind Deer Creek’s Taler Buck, who was the 5A state champion cross country winner. BlueJay Hunter Sallee just missed out on the top four by finishing fifth.

A good ol Guthrie and Deer Creek cross country battle played in the 3200 meter run as Buck took top honors, Cates was second, Deer Creek’s Blaine Powell was third, BlueJay junior Jonathan Ogan was fourth, and Cross was fifth. Just 28 seconds separated the five runners.

The BlueJay 4 x 100 relay team took top honors when they ran a 43.20 to win by .27 over Deer Creek.

Shawnee was two seconds quicker then the Jays in the 4 x 800 relay. Guthrie ran with Sallee, Dorio, Esau Paez, and Cross.

Tim Zupo, a three-sport letterman) finished second in the high jump with a leap of 6-02, but won the  long jump with a 20-11 mark. 

In the pole vault it was Guthrie junior Elias Kellogg was third with a jump of 12-0.

In the shot put and discus throw it was BlueJay Zach Brown earning both top spots. Brown finished with a 47-05.75 in the shot and 157-10 in the discus. Blake Belcher finished third in the shot put and Cody Doyle placed fourth in the discus.

Meanwhile, the Lady Jays did not finish as high, but will be sending numerous athlete’s to state this week state run in Ardmore on Friday and Saturday.

Guthrie’s Susie Unger was solid in the 100 meter dash by finishing second. The sophomore ran a 12.62 in the finals only to be out done by Deer Creek’s Kirsten Burnett (12.39).

Freshmen Lauren Toney ran both the 1600 and 3200 meter races as she finished ninth in the 1600 and sixth overall in the 3200.

Junior Kyra Macedo finished fifth in the 100 meter hurdles with a finals time of 17.58. Macedo took part in the 300 meter hurdles as well and finished eighth overall. She was announced as an additional qualifier in the 100 meter hurdle run at state.

The Lady Jays 4 x 100 relay team finished fourth with a time of 52.43.

Senior Erika Guerrero advanced to state with a 10-06 in the pole vault.

In the high jump, freshmen Katelyn Hinkle finished ninth overall with a 4-04 in the high jump.

Leeanna Baptiste just missed out on the fourth spot in the shot put, but junior Ellesia Brewer took third in the discus throw with a toss of 98-06 to advance.
