Bring It On: The Musical coming to The Pollard Theatre

Ready? Okay! The Pollard Theatre Company will present an electric, powerhouse performance with the regional premiere of the Tony Award-nominated show, Bring It On: The Musical, filled with an incredible score by two of Broadway’s most celebrated contemporary composers: Lin Manuel-Miranda and Tom Kitt, creators of the Broadway sensations Hamilton and Next to Normal. Join The Pollard Theatre Company June 9th – July 1st, 2017 for a treat that will literally leave the audiences cheering for more.

Bitingly relevant, sprinkled with sass, and inspired by the hit film, Bring It On The Musical takes audiences on a high-flying journey filled with the complexities of friendship, jealousy, betrayal, and forgiveness. Uniting some of the freshest and funniest creative minds on Broadway, Bring It On features an original story by Tony Award winner Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q), music and lyrics by Tony Award-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda (In The Heights, Hamilton), music by Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning composer Tom Kitt (Next To Normal), lyrics by Broadway lyricist Amanda Green (High Fidelity) and was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Musical.

Campbell is cheer-royalty at Truman High School and her senior year should prove the most cheertastic – she’s been named captain of the squad! But an unexpected redistricting has forced her to spend her final year of high school at the neighboring, hard knock Jackson High School. Despite having the deck stacked against her, Campbell befriends the dance crew girls and, along with their headstrong and hardworking leader Danielle, manages to form a powerhouse squad for the ultimate competition – the National Championships.

The design team for Bring It On: The Musical includes Pollard Director Timothy Stewart (Passing Strange, Legally Blonde), choreography by Hui Cha Poos (In the Heights), cheer/stunt choreography by Barbie Parker, costume design by Michael James, scenic design by James Hughes, lighting design by W. Jerome Stevenson, and sound design by Jared Blount.

With a colorful crew of characters, an exciting fresh musical sound, dynamic choreography, and aerial stunts, this all-new musical is sure to be emotionally gratifying in its story of redemption and breathtaking with amazingly vibrant athleticism. Artistic Director W. Jerome Stevenson states “When a group like the Pollard reaches a milestone, like its thirtieth season, you really want to push yourself and your artists as well as your audience. Here the title says it all: Bring It On! I think the audience is in for a real treat. We maintain our commitment to the narrative – the book is fun and music by some of the new young masters of the craft- including the creator of Hamilton – and then we layer on Hui’s brilliant choreography and the explosive element of Barbie’s cheer work. “Bring It On: The Musical” will run June 9th through July 1st at the Pollard Theatre. Tickets are $30 with senior, military, student and teacher discounts available.
