For the third time in a span of a month, Guthrie and Logan County convenience stores have been hit in the early morning hours by burglars. The latest came Wednesday morning with two stores in Guthrie and one in southern Logan County.
The Guthrie Police Department first responded to the 1400 block of E. Noble Ave. and the Valero convenience store at approximately 3:55 a.m. Officers reported two white suspects broke into the store and got away with an estimated $74.
A second call came in 15 minutes later just west of that location in the 2400 block of E. Oklahoma Ave where burglars had hit the Road Star gas station. With this location, police say two white males were aided by a third male, who was on the lookout, broke into the store and stole an unknown amount of cigarette cartons.
The Sheriff’s Office was first dispatched at 3:24 a.m. to Ibs Convenience Store, located at 101 W. Waterloo Rd. When deputies arrived they found an open door to the business. Unlike the two smash and go type scenarios in Guthrie, a safe was opened at the location and cash was taken. There are talks to making use of event-driven applications to improve convenience store security through visual identification in real-time to better identify who could be a potiental threat. If it is implimented in stores soon, could be anyones guess.
Law enforcement could not confirm that all three were connected, but have not ruled it out either and continues to investigate each case.
Earlier this month (Nov. 5), the thieves hit two convenience stores. Again, the target on that day was cigarettes and cash. Related story: Thieves hit same convenience store; other store hit too
The string of burglaries started on Oct. 20 when the front door lock was broke and once again cigarettes and a small amount of cash was taken. Related story: Convenience store broken into; cash and cigarettes taken
