Caden Hopfer excels at All-State games

The month of April was some of the lowest times for Caden Hopfer and his senior year of tennis, but the recent Guthrie High School graduate ended his high school career on a high note.

Hopfer won both of his matches in the annual All-State games in Tulsa with a win in singles and doubles action.

In doubles action, Hopfer teamed up with Carl Albert’s Parker Bryant to defeat the east side duo from Cascia Hall and Claremore.

“(I’m) so proud of Caden Hopfer winning his doubles and singles match at the All-State Matches tonight,” GHS head coach Mary Hudson said.

Hopfer, a four-time state qualifier, got off to a hot start this past season by winning his first three tournaments and was moving up the 5A charts.

However, the month of April arrived and Hopfer began fighting illnesses, including mono and celiac disease, causing him to miss three weeks of the season.

In regionals, Hopfer won his first two matches and qualified for the regional championship and the state tournament, but Hudson forced Hopfer’s hand to withdraw from the regional final and begin preparing for the 5A state tournament.

At state, Hopfer won his opening round match over his Claremore’s opponent before losing to Mount St. Mary’s Jack Wagner, a two-time singles state champion.

Hopfer was 20-4 on the season with two losses to Wagner and the forfeit in the regional tournament.
