The 12th ranked Guthrie BlueJays found the win column for the tenth time this season and did so on the road to spoil Western Heights Homecoming evening.
Western Heights held the lead on two separate occasions, but those leads held for only 43 seconds combine as Guthrie controlled the 32-minute game with a 53-40 win in Oklahoma City.
Sophomore guard Kai Callins was the spark plug with a game high 19 points, including 13 coming in the second half. Callins highlight came in the fourth quarter when he converted a 4-point play to give Guthrie a 13-point lead with 2:59 left in the game.
Senior guard Codee Gross chipped in with 10 first half points.
The BlueJays will take their 10-7 record on the road Tuesday when they face 2nd ranked Carl Albert (13-3). Listen to Head Coach Pete Papahronis post game radio interview.
Guthrie started quickly by jumping out to a 10-4 start forcing Heights to spend an early time-out. The lead would grow as high as 8 points before the Jets took off on an 8-0 run to tie the game at 14-all. At the break, Guthrie lead 26-23.
Heights, once again, tied the game (28-28) with 4:36 to play in the third quarter, but only to watch the Jays go on a 9-0 run in the next 1:42 to increase their lead 37-28 and eventually took a 40-33 lead into the fourth quarter.
In the last quarter, Heights took the strategy of fouling the Jays with Guthrie increasing the lead to double digits, but the visitors hit 8-of-9 free throws alone in the quarter and finished 11-13 overall from the stripe.
