Central Elementary had a few special guests and a tree planting on Wednesday morning to celebrate Arbor Day.
Mary Beth Gilliland began the event with an Arbor Day coloring challenge and was followed by the mayor inside the school’s cafeteria.
Mayor Mark Spradlin gave a short speech proclaiming, “I Mark Spradlin, mayor of the city of Guthrie, hereby acknowledge Arbor Day on April 2, 2014.”
Jared Cassada from the Guthrie Forestry Advisory Board talked to the students about the importance of trees and asked them what they are used for. Betsy Randolph, also from the Forestry Advisory Board, spoke to the students about what trees help produce.
Special guest Bill Merickel showed the students his Native American style flute, followed by a song.
Afterwards the students made their way outside and each got a chance to help plant a tree near the playground with the help of Randolph and Casada.
