Well, it finally got hot! I won’t comment on whether that is a good thing or a bad thing in my opinion, because it would be sure to make half of you upset. So, I will just say, it finally got hot. We were happy that it didn’t get hot until after Saturday, though. We held our 3rd Annual First Capital Triathlon Saturday morning, and it was a great success! We had 210 participants from all over Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Kansas, and more. We particularly enjoy this event because it is a true community effort, with Guthrie Chamber, City of Guthrie, Logan County Sherriff’s Office, Guthrie YMCA, Mercy Hospital, Dr. Ashley Wilcoxson, and many fine sponsors coming together to make it one of the best events in the state. It is a good thing that mornings are milder, though, since the Guthrie Farmer’s & Crafter’s Market opens at 8:00am on Saturday. It is a perfect time to bring the children and pets out to find fresh produce, crafts, baked goods, home crafted soaps and lotions, and MORE!!! Guthrie’s Market is certified as a farm fresh produce only market, unlike some other markets in the area, like Edmond’s Market. We feel that it is only fair to our customers and producers that they not have to compete with mass produced goods or produce shipped from other countries. Along with this, we will now be accepting SNAP & EBT payments! If you are on one of these programs you can purchase fresh produce at our market with your card. You will not only be helping yourself by eating the very freshest food available, but you will be supporting our local farmers, as well. We have a busy weekend coming up. Several groups will be in town for conventions and such, so if you see a stranger wandering through town, give them a smile. On Saturday the Girl Scouts will be having Pet Palooza at Mineral Wells Park between 1-4. Come get tips about the care of your pet from veterinarians and groomers, and there will be a contest for Best Dressed, Most Talented, Cutest, and Ugliest. The sign up form can be found on our community calendar at www.guthrieok.com. The purpose of the event is to help provide for the Guthrie Animal Shelter; donations of cat or dog food or other pet related items will be accepted and encouraged.
After you spend some time at Pet Palooza you can stop by the Ice Cream Social that will be had at Trinity Episcopal Church 310 E. Noble from 2-3. The Social is being given by the Fogarty Heights Neighborhood and the Red Brick Neighborhood and is free to all who would like to attend. After that, head on over to Highland Park Pool for The Relay For Life Pool Party from 5-9. There will be food and live music and when the sun goes down, they will have a movie on the lawn – Finding Nemo – at 9:30!
If you don’t want to work up a sweat outside, you can go over the pond to the old Girl Scout Cabin and do some square dancing with the Territorial Squares! They will be heating up the floor at 601 N. Pine from 7:00- 9:30. Don’t worry if you don’t know how, they will teach you.
I want to report that The Arts in Guthrie’s first Getting To Know You Potluck on Monday was a huge success! The purpose was to let local artists and arts enthusiasts have a chance to meet and mingle in a relaxed atmosphere. There was close to 80 people in attendance, with representatives from every walk of life, all celebrating Guthrie’s Arts Culture. TAG president, Bill Perring, welcomed everyone and he and
Executive Director Lucy Swanson shared news about what they have been working at. They reported that they had won a grant that they had applied for several months ago from The Oklahoma Arts Council with the purpose of helping us create a Cultural Arts District here. They also told us about plans to create a Mobile Art Gallery which would be a box truck, finished out on the inside so that Guthrie artists work can be displayed. The truck will then be driven to events all over the state to bring a little bit of Guthrie’s Arts District to other places and show them what we have to offer! That is marketing, folks!
There is always something to do in Guthrie…just open yourself to the possibilities.
