Hall of Fame Cheryl Miller, yes that Cheryl Miller, was formally introduced Wednesday morning as the women’s head coach at Langston University inside C.F. Gayles Fieldhouse.
Miller, a four-time All-American player at Southern California and a sideline reporter for TNT, takes over a Lions program that finished 20-13 last season, including a NAIA Championships appearance.
“This is an historic moment for Langston University athletics as we welcome legendary player and coach Cheryl Miller,” President Dr. Kent Smith said.” Securing a coach of the caliber and character of Coach Miller is a tribute to Athletic Director Mike Garrett’s stature in the sports world.”
Miller, who was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1995, coached two seasons at USC and for the WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury (1997-2000).
“I am excited to be a part of a university with such a rich heritage,” Miller said who helped lead her USC teams to the national championships in 1983 and ’84 and played for the 1984 U.S. Olympic team.
“We are talking championships,” Miller said. “The bar has been set high, but I look forward to raising the bar even higher. I also hope to develop the player’s potential both on and off the court.”
Lions athletic director Garrett, a Heisman trophy winner and former USC athletic director himself, says Miller as the talent to bring domination to Langston.
“We are thrilled and honored to have her here wearing Lion blue on our courts,” Garrett said who hired Miller as the USC head coach in 1993.
“Coach Miller has the skills and tools to lead our women’s basketball team to domination in the NAIA.”
