Christian Camp mourning tragic loss of executive director

Central Christian Camp has touched countless number of lives for 55 years for those with special needs. A big part of that has been through the work of James Wheeler. On Monday, Wheeler died following a massive stroke he suffered over the weekend.

Wheeler, the camp’s executive director since 2013 and a volunteer since 1990, suffered the stroke on Friday evening. On Saturday, family members and friends said he showed signs of improvements, but on Monday suffered a cerebellar stroke of the brain stem.

The camp provides camping experiences for churches, persons with special needs and a variety of diverse groups with programs spread out over the 300 acre facility north of Seward Rd in Guthrie.

The mission of Central Christian Camp & Conference Center is to provide an outdoor oriented, safe haven where all persons may come to retreat, reflect, have fun and gain knowledge and skills which will nurture their lives, their love of God and one another.

Along with Central Christian Camp, Wheeler, 37, was instrumental in the Make Promises Happen program and helped oversee all camp functions and activities.

“Tonight, we lost a great man. Not only was James an amazing husband and father to his girls, but he also was a huge supporter of Central Christian Camp and Make Promises Happen,” a statement on the camp’s website read.

“He was a father figure to countless young people and touched so many lives on so many levels. His passion was caring for and creating opportunities for individuals with special needs. James was the epitome of teaching others to live a “life without limits.” James was truly one of the most genuine, encouraging, and influential people ever to grace the earth. He has changed so many lives and he will be missed.”

Wheeler continues to touch lives after death.

According to a social media post from the Central Christian and Make Promises Happen, Wheeler donated six organs and tissue and bone donation.

“James will be able to continue changing the lives of over 300 people even after he is gone,” the post read.

He was a very nice man doing the Lord’s work and I am saddened that he has passed at such a young age. My thoughts and prayers are with his family….especially his children.
