Fred Schultz simply thought it was going to be one of those lousy training sessions inside City Hall, but it quickly took a turn – a life-long memory turn. Schultz learned he was being honored for his military service and after years was reunited with military medals and dog tags.

It has been fifty years since Schultz served in Vietnam and was presented an Air Force Veteran hat, a personalized engraved coin and his own day in Guthrie (Airman First-Class Freddie Lee Schultz Day).
On May 4, 1964, Schultz, a City of Guthrie employee currently with the Parks Department, joined the United States Air Force as a C-121 Crew Chief and headed to Vietnam. He served his four-year voluntary enlistment and returned to civilian life. As the years went by, and many moves later, Schultz lost his military medals and dog tags.
O Monday, Schultz was surprised one final time with an emotional gift.
Guthrie-Edmond Airport Manager Justin Heid and others learned of Schultz’s story and through the efforts with Tinker Air Force Base and other agencies a collection of medals were presented to Schultz in a shadow box.
“I appreciate it and thank you very much,” Schultz said to his colleagues and friends as he overcame his emotions to find a few, kind words.
