Did you notice the increase at the cash register on Friday?
The sales tax within Guthrie city limits was boosted on Friday. Now, the additional income brought in will benefit capital improvements and quality of life throughout the city.
The city’s sales tax elevated from three percent to 3.75 percent. Overall, the city sales tax now stands at 9 percent.
The city sales tax marks the first increase since 1979.
Breaking down the 9 percent is as follows: State collects 4.5 percent, 3.75 percent to the City of Guthrie and .75 percent to Logan County (roads, rural fire departments and jail operations).
The three-quarter of a cent sales tax proposal, with a 15-year (June 30, 2031) sunset clause, passed 54.86 percent to 45.14 percent (531-437).
The additional portion of sales tax collected for the City of Guthrie will aid in financing a new wastewater treatment plant, ladder truck, sports complex, pool and splash pad facility, repairs and improvements at the cemetery, and more.
“Staff has envisioned this as a tool to help out all of our departments and the entire community. To have infrastructure necessary to create a higher quality of life and to be able to use it as development in the future to lower the cost for all of our citizens,” City Manager Bruce Johnson said.
