Coat drive benefits several in Logan County

Several adults and children in Logan County will now stay warm this winter with generous donors, along with a cleaners and real estate company.

Exit Realty, located 105 E. Oklahoma, began asking for new and used coats and with the help of Dean’s Cleaners, located 122 E. Cleveland, approximately 300 coats were donated to the Logan County Youth Shelter.

Shelter Director Lacy Hudson thanked the employee’s and all of those who donated the coats.

Exit Realty opened their doors for the coats to be dropped off and then were taken to Dean’s Cleaners to be cleaned so that they could be donated.

The organization offers prevention and crisis care and counseling for families in Logan County for children in need of a temporary “safe place.” Although, the shelter does have some children from other counties.

Hudson explained the youth shelter is the only one in Logan County and that the shelter can always use support to help the children in the home, that can range from infants to 17-year-old’s.

The shelter is currently in need of bedding, dresser drawers and day-to-day living items. The shelter is also in hopes of adding sand underneath the playground set in the back yard.

Hudson said the home can support up to 11 kids, but says the shelter receives eight to 12 calls a day wanting to place a child.

Hudson gave a tour of the shelter, located at 4710 S. Division, and though the living quarters is tight, the children were enjoying their toys and games while out of school on Fall Break.

The shelter has two full-time employee’s and six part-time employees. Hudson said there is at least one worker on duty and that one worker must be awake at all times for the safety of the children.

The shelter receives help from several agencies, including the Logan County United Way, but continues to be in need of assistance.
