Collision sends school bus into front yard; one person arrested

A Guthrie school bus and a sports utility vehicle were involved in an accident on Friday afternoon. The impact sent the bus into a residential front yard and the driver of the SUV in jail.

Minutes before 4 p.m., a gold Chevrolet Trailblazer was traveling eastbound on Harrison Ave. and the school bus was at a stop sign on Maple St.

It is unknown what caused the accident that sent the bus into the yard, but the driver of the SUV left the scene and continued east on Harrison.

With the help of citizens, a Logan County Sheriff’s deputy located the SUV a mile away from the scene in the 2200 block of E. Oklahoma.

The male driver was taken into custody on several charges, including driving under suspension, warrants, leaving the scene of an accident, open container and possibly driving under the influence.

An open bottle of beer, vodka and drug paraphernalia were found inside the SUV.

Following a field sobriety test, the driver was taken to the local hospital for a DUI blood test.

According to Guthrie Public Schools there were four students on the bus, a monitor and driver at the time of the accident.

The school says there were no injuries reported and the students were released to their parents at the scene.

“We are very thankful for the work of our driver and monitor to keep our students safe,” Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson said. “Fortunately, no injuries came from this accident.”
