It was one of the shortest Board of County Commissioner’s meeting in some time, but the three member board named a chairman, vice chairman and inspected the Logan County Jail.
Logan County District 2 Commissioner Mike Pearson made the recommendation for current Chairman Monty Piearcy (District 3 Commissioner) to remain as the chair, but Piearcy quickly declined the idea of the position for a second straight year.
Piearcy then nominated District 1 Commissioner Marven Goodman.
“Marven has been here for four years and has not been chairman yet,” Piearcy said sitting in the middle of the commissioner’s table. “I appreciate the nomination.”
Goodman second the nomination and a 3-0 vote was casted.
Next on the agenda was to select a vice-chair and quickly, once again, Pearson nominated Piearcy and was immediately followed by a second by Goodman, but Piearcy again declined and nominated Pearson. Goodman made the second and was followed with a 3-0 vote.
Following the consent agenda, the commissioners were accompanied with Sheriff Damon Devereaux for the annual jail inspection.
The commissioners went through the booking area, control center, kitchen, medical room and various offices with Devereaux fielding questions on the 10-year-old jail.
“The jail looks efficient and I thought it was maintained well,” Piearcy said.
Pearson agreed but said the jail was showing “signs of wear. Definitely going have to spend a couple of bucks on it.”
Pearson concluded by saying, “it’s well run.”
As of Tuesday morning, the jail held 175 prisoners. The capacity for the jail is set at 198, but additional room is available with temporary beds, if needed.
