Have you planted anything yet?
Did you notice the freezing temperature on Sunday and Monday morning? Monday was a long term freeze so it probably got anything unprotected. The average last freeze is April 1st, but last year that date bit a lot of you in the pocketbook because the last freeze was not until April 24.
A lot of you go by the rule of nothing in the garden until after Easter and still others go by nothing in the garden until after 89er’s day. If it works for you then keep at it. If in doubt when to plant then wait until you are absolutely sure.
Have you had your soil tested this year? Have you ever had your soil tested? Soil sample testing might tell you what to add so that you can have huge vegetables and lots of them versus a struggling vegetable garden. The Oklahoma State University Extension Office at the Logan County Fairgrounds can take care of soil sample testing for you. Get about a dozen clean soil samples from about six inches deep in various parts of your garden and mix them around in a clean bucket and then put that in a bag provided at the Extension Office. Fill out the form on the bag and pay your fee and in about a week or two you can find out what it takes to grow the beanstalk like in the fairy tale Jack and the Beanstalk. You might want to give it a try just to see if you are doing it right.
And just so you know I heard a rumor that Haley is going to possibly be holding a Master Gardener Boot Camp with guest speakers and all the trimmings and you don’t have to be a Master Gardener to attend. It might be well worth your time and give you some good understanding of some old and new gardening techniques. More information will be provided as we get closer but get ready to put that on your schedule and go. Haley has done a great job on this one.
Still need some help planting some onions if you are interested and there is some mulch that needs to be spread. Nothing is heavy but it is repetitive. Waiting to see what kind of new growth we get with the apple trees this year. So far they look really good and strong. Tree mulch has been spread around the base of all the trees so they are ready to go for the summer. Most of the garden beds have been filled with leaf mulch and we are trying to spread that tree mulch in all the areas around the raised beds to keep weeds and grass down.
So come on down and do a little volunteer work in the Guthrie Community Garden and listen to some good music while you are there. We can crank up the volume and really shake the ground and cause another earthquake if you want.
