High school prom can be an expensive endeavor for students and their parents, but a local group of women tried to ease the financial burden by offering free gowns.
The group, along with generous donations, helped offer advice and select the evening dresses for Guthrie High School students.
Some dresses were new and some were gently used, but all were free.
“It made it real easy for my family for me to go to prom,” one student said. “They had a style for everyone.”
Organizers made contact with 110 girls inside the high school and gave away 52 prom dresses. Last year 36 dresses were given away and 25 the previous year.
“We are a group of women/moms that want to establish relationships with teen girls in our community,” one organizer said. “We want to be positive role models for them. We support and encourage all the girls we meet. All the dresses have been bought or donated by people in our community who support our cause.”
The junior-senior prom is set for April 5.
