Could a major street that runs right through Guthrie be renamed? It will be researched and considered by city officials in July.
The topic has been talked about for several years, but following the Guthrie City Council workshop, on Tuesday, Division Street (U.S. 77) may be going under a name change.
How does Vision Street sound?
While a secured name has not been determined, or even considered, some council members and business owners would like to see the current street name disappear.
Why?
Dictionary.com defines division as the act or process of dividing; state of being divided. Those suggesting a name change say Division gives a negative connotation.
One hurdle with the name change would be with the businesses and residents on the popular street. With the name change, stationery items such as business cards, menus and mail would need to be updated for the local businesses. For residents, they would need to update such items as mail, drivers license, doctor and dentist contacts and employer information.
According to city officials, the post office would allow two years for those affected to update their information if the street was indeed renamed.
The council will discuss the possible action in the next workshop scheduled for July 1 at 6 p.m.
Someone call the Army and tell them to start calling the 82nd Airborne Division the “82nd Airborne group of guys who are all about positivity”.

There are lots of more important things that need to be changed before you start changing the names of major streets.
Really??? Is this what our city council is spending their time and our tax dollars on? Are they trying out for U.S. Congress? The reason for naming it Division St. is because it is the dividing line between the east and west parts of town. Only an idiot would associate the name with something negative. Whose idea was this?
Division is a very big part of Guthrie’s history. No, it shouldn’t be changed, not negative in any sense.
What kinda of drugs is the city council on? Who in their right mind sets the priorities? More important things to do than this monumental waste of time and energy. Political Correctness be damned!!!! Wow adults who get offended act like children. My grandchildren behave better than this.
I think the renaming Division is not warranted. We have bigger issues than a street name. If streets are what you want to work on how about renaming the Mockingbird streets, or Horseshoe. How about let’s clean up Guthrie.
i thought it was called division because it divides the numbered streets and the named streets
