The Guthrie city council met Tuesday evening for a brief regular scheduled meeting. Council members were not unanimous in their vote, but engineering will soon begin for the municipal pool in Highland Park.
Myers Engineering was approved by the council (6-1) for design and construction administration of improvements to the City’s pool.
The total, agreed cost for engineering services was $215,000.
During a workshop earlier this month, City Manager Bruce Johnson said $2.2 million has been reserved for the pool project, which will be funded from the three-quarters sales tax that was passed by citizens in February. Related article: Voters say YES for City’s Capital Improvement Plan
The agreement with Myers Engineering is for professional services to begin work on aquatics facilities improvements, including site study and reporting, design, plan preparation, bidding, and construction to design and/or refurbish and improve the existing swimming pool, bath house facility and overall site.
The goal is to complete the design within the next six months, with construction to follow and opening in 2018. Related article: Plans beginning to start for swimming pool, water park in Highland Park
Johnson told the Park Board once the plans were developed, the City staff would bring them back to the board for review. Final plans for the facilities will be presented to the City Council prior to proceeding with the project.
Council member Brian Bothroyd casted the lone no vote. During discussion, Bothroyd stated he spoken to 39 constituents and “100 percent” were against building a water park next to the pool. Instead, they rather see renovation of the pool and a splash pad nearby.
