Councilman Don Channel resigns city council post

City of Guthrie announced Wednesday afternoon that Ward 3 Councilman Don Channel has submitted his resignation for both the balance of his current term and his next four-year term that would have started on Monday, May 1, 2023.

In a resignation letter, Channel stated, “After a lot of consideration I have decided to resign my seat in Ward 3. I will not be accepting my second term beginning in May as well.”

“The council has made a better person out of me and I respect anyone who would want that position,” Channel said in his letter. “The position has got to a point where it requires more time, energy and effort than I am able to dedicate to the position. Wishing you and the remaining council all of the luck in the future!”

“Council Member Channel should be held in high regard and fully recognized for his love of the Guthrie Community and his genuine care for the dedicated members of city staff that is the heart of Team Guthrie,” City Manager Leroy Alsup said.

Alsup continued, “Councilman Channel was always thoroughly prepared for every city council meeting and was not afraid to challenge the status quo when he felt other options should be considered. Over the last four years, Don was a key player in many community improvements that will serve Guthrie for many years to come. We wish Don nothing but the best in the future.”
