The Logan County Sheriff’s Office and the United State Marshall Service agreed to new terms for housing federal inmates in the county jail. Without the contract, the jail and patrol would look significantly different.
The Logan County Board of County Commissioners approved (3-0) the contract Wednesday morning at their end of the month regular scheduled meeting.
Sheriff Damon Devereaux reported the cost to house the federal inmates will increase from $57 to $63 per day. In addition, transportation costs increased from $20 to $25 per hour, including mileage (at the federal rate).
The sheriff says on average the county jail holds 45 to 50 inmates a day while the contract allows up to 55 inmates.
District 1 Commissioner Marven Goodman asked the sheriff, “What happens if we no longer have those (federal) inmates in our county jail?”
Devereaux responded, “If we were to lose that federal contract, we would probably diminish services (jail and patrol) by half without additional funding from the county.”
The average income from the contract draws $85,000 to $90,000 a month.
Logan County Clerk Troy Cole quickly noted the monthly total income is not all profit.
“That’s not all profit. There’s a cost to feeding, medical care and all that is provided that comes out of that $63 per day.”
