Guthrie alum Emily Davis helped her Oklahoma City Stars team win a national championship just weeks ago. Now, the OCU senior has been recognized with a highly distinct individual award.
Oklahoma City University has chosen Davis and OCU baseball player Chad Carman as the 2011-12 Jim Wade Award winners as its female and male student-athletes of the year.
The two were among the honorees in the seventh annual Jim Wade Student-Athlete Awards Banquet on Sunday at Abe Lemons Arena. OCU student-athletes were recognized for their achievements this season.
The Jim Wade Award winners are selected by the athletic department as those who best represent the Stars both on and off the field of competition and reflect the spirit of the award’s namesake, Gen. Jim Wade.
“The highest honor that we have for student-athletes at OCU is the Jim Wade Award,” OCU athletic director Jim Abbott told the school’s website. “We are so blessed to have terrific student-athletes across the board. These students have done so much to continue the tradition of excellence academically and athletically at OCU.”
Davis, a senior from Guthrie, Okla., helped OCU win three Sooner Athletic Conference women’s basketball regular-season championships, three SAC Tournament titles, four trips to the NAIA Division I Tournament, three appearances in the NAIA Tournament semifinals and the 2012 NAIA Division I championship.
She became a two-time NAIA scholar-athlete award winner and academic all-conference. She was co-winner of the SAC sportsmanship award this season. In her career, Davis accumulated 448 points, 275 rebounds, 167 assists and 95 steals. She recorded 2.9 points and 2.2 rebounds as a senior.
Davis has been active in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, serving as president of OCU’s chapter. She is majoring in early childhood education.
Davis helped lead the Oklahoma City University women’s team to a 35-1 season and with a 69-48 win over Union (Tennessee) to capture the program’s sixth national title. See related story: Guthrie’s Davis wins college National Championship
Davis, a two-year captain for the Stars, became a two-time NAIA scholar-athlete award winner by maintaining a 3.50 grade-point average.
She contributed 2.9 points, 2.2 rebounds and 0.92 steals a game.
She was named as C0-Sportsmanship of the Year by the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Carman, a senior from Midwest City, Okla., took the male Jim Wade Award for the second year in a row.
