If you ever wanted to serve on the Guthrie City Council you will have an opportunity to file for your candidacy in December. In total, four positions will be up for grabs in 2017.
Along with the mayor’s position, each ward will have one council member position available. Currently, the seated members, include Steve Gentling (Mayor), John Wood (Ward 1), Jeff Taylor (Ward 2) and Gaylord Z. Thomas (Ward 3).
Filing for candidacy will be held on December 5, 6 and 7 at the Logan County Election Board from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The primary election will be held on Feb. 14, 2017 and a general election, if needed, on April 4, 2017.
In the event that only two candidates file for the office of Mayor, their names shall be placed on the general election ballot.
The names of the two candidates for councilman from each ward receiving the greatest number of votes from their respective wards at the primary election, held on February 14, 2017, shall be placed on the general election ballot. Should two or fewer people file for the office of Councilman from any single ward, their names shall be printed on the general election ballot.
To be considered qualified for council you must be a citizen of the United States of America and the State of Oklahoma, 21 years of age or older, a registered voter, a resident of the City of Guthrie for two years immediately preceding the date of the general election, or a resident of an area which has been annexed to and has become a part of the City of Guthrie for two years immediately preceding the general election, a resident of the ward the candidate seeks to represent, in case of candidates filing for the office of councilman and file a declaration of candidacy.
There is a $25 filing fee.
Voting precincts will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the following locations:
