In a ceremony held last week, the City of Guthrie received the Guthrie Armory in better condition after the Oklahoma Department of Environmental Quality made the building safe with the removal several contaminants.
The Guthrie Armory, located at 720 E. Logan, was built by the Works Progress Administration in 1937 and placed on the National register of Historical Places on Sept. 8, 1988 by the United State Department of the Interior.
The building has served for a variety of groups and events, including the National Guard 45th Infantry Division, Guthrie High School basketball games, school events, a place where citizens took their drivers test to earn a driver’s license and at one time a skating center.
Over time, the building became vacant and the City of Guthrie agreed to take it back. However, DEQ came in and cleaned the building from asbestos and lead paint in amount of $100,000. The department also sealed the perimeter to avoid exposure from any residue.
There are no future plans of use at this time for the historic building and currently serves as a place for the Logan County SWAT team and storage for the city.
