Dirt work underway with expansion of Owen Field Sports Complex

Dirt work is well underway at Owen Fields.

Dirt is being moved and prepared for baseball and softball games at Owen Fields. In May, the City of Guthrie hosted a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of construction.

The project is part of the original Land and Water Conservation Fund’s $1M grant, which the City of Guthrie matched with an additional $1M of Capital Improvement Projects (CIP) funds and then an additional $1.5M of existing CIP funds, marking a significant step in the long-awaited expansion project for the Owen Field Sports Complex.

True North Contracting has been awarded the earthwork package at an amount not to exceed $528,279.02, laying the groundwork for the project. Bid documents are being prepared for the next phase of construction, which could be decided in August and perhaps awarded in September.

Part of the project includes the construction of new softball and baseball fields, the installation of a lighting system at one new field, a new ADA-compliant concession/restroom facility, quick connects for irrigation at each field, a new entryway from State Highway 33, and an ADA-compliant parking area to serve all fields. This ambitious project promises to enhance the community’s recreational facilities and provide modern, accessible amenities for all.

The Guthrie Sports Task Force, appointed by the City Council, worked diligently with city staff and City Engineer Bill Myers of Myers Engineering to develop a project scaled to a fundable size, making it both affordable and competitive for the grant.
