Discipline referrals down in Guthrie elementary schools

With the transition to neighborhood schools for Guthrie Public Schools this school year, the school district has been pleased with several outcomes with the transition. One of the positive factors to the start of the school year has been a decrease in discipline referrals.

At Monday night’s school board meeting, Superintendent Dr. Mike Simpson informed board members discipline referrals to the principal and bus referrals were both down from the previous school year.

“This was not something that I really expected to see. But when the principals told me about it and I started diving into the data it was very interesting,” Simpson said.

The discipline data was compared from 2017 to 2018 in the combined months of October and November with students in Pre-K to the fourth grade.

In 2017, 173 discipline referrals were sent out and in 2018 that number was lowered to 100 referrals, which represents a 42 percent drop.

In the same time period, 103 total students were referred for discipline issues last year compared to 80 this year. A reduction of 22 percent.

For bus discipline referrals with the same two-month period, the numbers decreased from 41 to 25 and the total number of student referrals dropped from 36 to 20 students.

“It’s pretty compelling,” Simpson said of the decreased numbers.
