Distressed calving workshop scheduled for Feb. 1

OSU Cooperative Extension office in Logan County will hold a distressed calving workshop on February 1 beginning at 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.

Calving season will be here before we know it, and now is the perfect time to discuss the proper procedures for pulling a calf or knowing when to call a veterinarian for assistance. If you have raised cattle for any length of time, chances are that you have pulled a calf before. Most of us learn by watching our dads or grandfathers and adopt those techniques without reservation. Not every technique is foolproof. And no one can guarantee you will save every calf even if you follow the best practices, but you may not lose as many.

Dr. Barry Whitworth, OSU Extension Veterinarian specialist, and Dr. Dan Wagnon, with Veterinary Corner in Guthrie, will give information and hands on demonstrations concerning distressed calving signs, manipulating breech births, calf pulling techniques, and medical intervention. If you have questions or interest in attending this workshop, please contact the Logan County Extension office at 405-282-3331 on or before January 30 to add your name to the list of participants.
