Doolin scores five touchdowns in rout of Northwest Classen

Zac Payne set the mood quickly while Ty Doolin made his presence known throughout the night against Northwest Classen inside renovated Taft Stadium on Thursday evening.

On the third play of the game, Payne, who finished with two interceptions on the night, stepped in front of a Classen pass and scampered in for a 29-yard pick six just 63 seconds into the game.

The score was one of eight scores for the Jays in a 56-12 win.

With the win, Guthrie is now 3-3 overall and 1-2 in district play. Northwest dropped their third straight game and fell to 0-3 in district action and 3-3 overall.

In his best game as a running back, Doolin finished with 211 yards on 23 carries and finished with five rushing scores. Doolin finished with touchdown runs of 6, 1, 3, 52 and 18 yards.

Doolin aided the Jays in the running game to finish with 466 yards of total offense. In addition, CJ Ward added 116 yards on nine touches. Ward’s biggest run was his last run with a 67-yard score down the Jays sideline and into the south end zone.

Head coach Kelly Beeby offered praise for both running backs in his post-game radio interview, but quickly highlighted the offensive line who continues to get healthier each week.

Perhaps, the third most impressive offensive drive of the season, the Jays traveled 91 yards on 14 plays in just under eight minutes for their final score of the half.

The Jays held a 28-0 halftime lead and escalated that in the third quarter with three more scores to go up 49-0 with 1:34 to play in the third quarter.

Guthrie finished with 20 first downs and were a perfect 5-5 on third down attempts.

With reserves playing late in the fourth quarter, Northwest found the end zone twice and was able to pad their offensive numbers after not being able to move the ball against the Jays defense.

Guthrie returns home on Friday for Homecoming 2016 and for the first time will play Lawton Ike, who has made their way into Class 5A after years in Class 6A. Kick is set for 7 p.m.
