Guthrie Dudes head coach Chuck Burtcher had a lot riding in the annual 89er’s baseball game Thursday evening. In return, his team responded.
Burtcher, Guthrie’s current mayor, kept his coaching record perfect against the Oklahoma City Pirates with a 14-9 win inside the friendly confines of Squires Field.
Locals from the Guthrie area came together for their rendition of the 1889 game with the celebration of 89er’s Week. Players dressed according to the players of1889. Although, some shoes appeared to have designer names on the side.
The game took a turn in the fourth inning when a Dudes pitcher appeared to be hit on purpose. The batter thought about it…and took off for the mound and the Pirates pitcher. Seconds later, both benches had cleared and it was on.
The WWE would have been proud with all the miss punches as the play-match lasted a good 15 seconds. The announcer was over heard saying, “sometimes that just happens in baseball.”
The game was presented by the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame Museum 89er Celebration Committee.
