The El Reno Indians have hit the meat part of their schedule of the 2010 season and the results have not been that great for the Indian ball club.

The Indians are 2-5 overall and 1-3 in district play with all three district losses coming against playoff teams in the last three weeks: Carl Albert, Deer Creek, and last week to Ada. In those three losses, El Reno has been outscored 40 to 147.
The Indians will make a trip to Jelsma Stadium, Friday night, as Guthrie (6-1, 4-0) will celebrate Senior Night. Kick off is set for 7:30 and will be aired on state-wide television on KSBI-TV and world-wide on Guthrie Sports Page and locally on Triple Play Sports Radio 105.1 FM. Pregame for both begins at 7:00.
El Reno Head Coach Tom Cobble is in his third season with the Indians and prior to this season piled up a 21-4 record in his first two seasons that witness El Reno making the 2009 quarter finals and 2008 semifinals. The 11-win season a year ago was the most wins for the Indians. The previous high was 10 wins in 2008 and 1981. All came under the watchful eye of Cobble.
This season the Indians are trying to regroup from losing a successful and talented 2009 senior class. The Indians will start four sophomores on defense that is allowing 32-points a game. Last week the defense allowed 185 rushing yards and 203 passing yards in the 55-13 set back to Ada.
The Indian defense will have the daunting task of trying to slow down a Guthrie offense that is averaging 34 points a game and a balance offense of 194 rushing and 207 passing on average.
The center piece of the offense is sophomore quarterback Bryan Dutton, who needs just 34 passing yards to become Guthrie’s career passing leader. He will enter with 1,409 yards in the air and an impressive 6-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
As impressive as the Guthrie offense has been, it’s the BlueJay defense that has been stellar in holding opponents from the scoreboard. The defense has allowed just three touchdown drives in the last four week’s, including against three 5A-1 playoff teams (Deer Creek, Ada, and Carl Albert).
The Indians will try to counter the Guthrie defense by utilizing their skill players, including senior Devante Moore (6’1, 200).
El Reno has shown signs of inconsistency running the ball this season and will be up against their toughest competition against the run. Guthrie allows a season low 53 rushing yards a game while the Indians average 97-yards on the ground.
Moore, a stand-out on the basketball court, in six of the first seven games leads the Indians in all-purpose yards with 4oo rushing and 105 receiving and will line up in many different positions. As a team, the Indians are averaging 242 yards of offense.
The signal caller is senior Ridge Gargasz (6’1, 175) who is completing nearly 50% of his passes and has four passing scores. His favorite wide receiver targets are junior Rashaad Copeland (6’0, 160) and junior Raymond Little (5’9, 150). Copeland has brought in 6-touchdown receptions while Little has five.
Remember the Indians
Last year El Reno came to Guthrie and shut-out the Jays, 18-0, on Homecoming Night in the second week of the season. The loss was Guthrie’s third lost in a row dating back to 2008, was the first home shut-out since 2001, and stopped a 17-game home winning streak for the Jays.
This season Guthrie enters winners of four in a row and have a six-game home winning streak.
