Elderly woman escapes injury after crash at gas station

An elderly woman narrowly avoided serious injury Monday afternoon following a one-vehicle crash at a local gas station in Guthrie.

Emergency crews from the Guthrie Police Department and the Guthrie Fire Department responded to the Murphy USA gas station just after 3 p.m. after receiving reports of a crash. Upon arrival, first responders found a black SUV with airbags deployed near the front of the store.

According to a witness who was filling up their vehicle at the time, the SUV’s driver had just finished fueling and was attempting to leave the pump area when the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The SUV jumped forward, striking a cement post positioned in front of the gas station building — a barrier likely preventing even more serious damage.

The witness said they were nearly struck, along with their vehicle, by the out-of-control vehicle, but managed to avoid being hit.

Fortunately, the driver did not appear to sustain any serious injuries and declined EMS transport. However, the SUV was a recent purchase.

Authorities remained on scene to work the crash. No other injuries were reported.
