Take the characters from Scooby Doo, put them in an abandoned cabin, throw in some blood-thirsty rock ‘n’ roll demons and you’ve got yourself a good old fashion blood fest! EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL, comes to The Pollard Theater, October 10th – November 1st, and is the second production of the company’s 28th Season.
Based on Sam Raimi’s 80s cult classic films, EVIL DEAD tells the tale of 5 college kids who travel to a cabin in the woods and accidentally unleash an evil force; and although it may sound like just a horror, it’s way more! The songs are hilariously campy and the show is bursting with more broad humor than a Monty Python sketch. EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL unearths the old familiar story: boy and friends take a weekend getaway at abandoned cabin, boy expects to get lucky, boy unleashes ancient evil spirit, friends turn into Candarian demons, boy fights until dawn to survive.
The Pollard Theatre Company has assembled a camp-tastic cast which includes Sarah Henry, Joshua McGowen, Megan Montgomery, Austin J. Morris, Jon-Philip Olson, Jasmine Richman, and Wil Rogers as Ash. Pollard company members and long time Evil Dead fans, Jared Blount and Jennifer Rosson make their directorial debut with this Halloween extravaganza and have assembled a stellar production team which includes Todd S. Malicoate (musical direction), Heidi Hoffer (scenic design), Michael James (costume design), Timothy Stewart (property design) and Megumi Katayama (sound design).
While EVIL DEAD: THE MUSICAL could be considered a departure from the Pollard’s traditional offering, audiences can rest assured that the Pollard production of the underground hit will maintain the company’s commitment to strong story-telling and complete theatrical production. “This show appealled to us because it allowed us the opportunity to combine traditional story telling with the unique party atmosphere that this show and its fans demand,” explained Pollard Artistic Director W. Jerome Stevenson. “That is why the search for the show’s directors was so important. They had to have just the right mix of passion for the material and an understanding of that cosplay fan party atmosphere, as well as technical skill and stagecraft to make the play entertaining for people who’ve never heard of Evil Dead. After all, if you take away the walking, talking, singing demons and zombies – it’s still a traditional piece of musical theatre.”
