Fatality report for the month of March

Department of Public Safety officials report an decrease in traffic fatalities. There were 44 fatalities in March 2013 compared to 64 in the same month last year.

Guthrie News PageDuring the month of March there was four motorcyclist and four pedestrians who died in traffic related crashes. The highest daily fatality numbers include 12 deaths on Fridays, dropping to seven on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. There were 11 days in the month of March the Department of Public Safety reported no fatalities.

Four of the fatality crashes were alcohol-related. Thirty-eight of the fatality victims were Oklahoma residents and six nonresidents. There were 31 male and 13 female victims.

Eleven of the fatality victims were under the age of 20. The 41 – 50 year-old age group led the fatality count with 14.

McCurtain and Pontotoc County led the state with a fatality count of four, followed by Garvin, Oklahoma and Payne Counties with three fatalities each.

The highest number of fatalities occurred on State Highways with 19 . There were 10 fatalities on County Roads .

Seventy percent of those who died in traffic collisions were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash.
